Some of the slang names for alcohol are booze, sauce,
brewskis, hooch, hard stuff, and juice. Don't worry about trying
to fit in or be cool when it comes to drinking alcohol. Most
teens aren't drinking alcohol. Drinking is not as common or as
"cool" as some people would like you to believe it is.

Alcohol is in drinks like beer, wine, liquor, wine coolers,
whiskey, liqueurs, and even some coffee drinks. If you are not
sure whether the drink you are going to have has alcohol in it,
check the label. If there is alcohol in the drink, it has to say so
on the label—it's the law. If you are still not sure or can't tell
from the label, ask a trusted adult.

TOBACCO

Cigarettes seem to be everywhere. We see people smoking in
movies and on TV, but the truth is most preteen and teenage
girls don't smoke. When my health teacher told the class that,
I didn't believe it at first. But, then he showed us statistics
and we found out that what he said is true! In fact, nearly 86
percent of 8th-grade girls don't smoke and 77 percent of 10th-
grade girls don't smoke. I don't know about you, but I want to
be in the popular crowd (the 77 percent) when I am in 10th-
grade. Nobody I know has given me a good reason to smoke. For
me, it has been just the opposite; people I like, and who really
like me, tell me all kinds of good reasons not to smoke. I guess
I will listen to the people who really like and care about me.
Like I said before, my health teacher is pretty cool. Click on
the links below to see the damage tobacco can do to you!

MARIJUANA

My health teacher told us about marijuana also. He explained to
us that some people believe marijuana isn't harmful. But, after
hearing what he said about it, I am convinced it is unhealthy.
First, here is a list of names some use when they are talking
about marijuana: weed, grass, reefer, ganja, Mary Jane, blunt,
joint, roach, and nail. And, guess what girls—most of our
classmates do not use marijuana. Some people in Hollywood and
in the music business might want us all to believe that more
teens use marijuana, but we are smarter than that, right?

Some people say that smoking cigarettes is worse for you than
smoking marijuana. My health teacher says that is wrong
because smoking one joint (marijuana rolled up in paper)
affects the lungs as much as four cigarettes. If you don't know
how cigarettes damage your lungs, click on here to find out.
After you read that, I think you will agree with me that
neither marijuana nor cigarettes are good for you, so who cares
which one is worse? Just don't use either.

CLUB DRUGS

If you've heard people talking about ecstasy or GHB or Special
K, then you've heard people talking about "club drugs." And,
just like cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, and inhalants, club
drugs will hurt your body if you use them.

When people talk about club drugs, they are usually referring
to ecstasy, GHB, Rohypnol (which is pronounced "ro-HIP-nall"),
or Ketamine (which is pronounced "KET-a-mean"). Sometimes
people will be talking about club drugs and you won't know what
they are talking about because each of them has a bunch of
slang names.

Here are some of the slang names we learned in school. I have
put them here for you so it is easier to read.

Ecstasy X, E, XTC, Hug Drug, or Love Drug

GHB Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, or Liquid
Ecstasy

Rohypnol Roofies, Rophies, and the Forget-Me-Not Pill

Ketamine K, Special K, Kit Kat, Keller, Super Acid, and Super C
