Creating a marine “experience” for pupils is an exciting way of bringing
the seas, oceans and bays to life inside the classroom through the
Social, Environmental and Scientific Education curriculum. The marine
environment is a fantastically valuable resource and it is important
that Ireland is able to research and develop it through science,
technology and innovation in a sustainable way. Irish students, schools
and communities are therefore encouraged to develop an informed
appreciation of Ireland’s land and marine resource so they can take
responsibility for its care and development for future generations.
Through the Geography syllabus teachers can introduce "The Real Map
of Ireland" to students and learn about Ireland's 220 million acre marine
resource. The Real Map of Ireland lessons, provide an introduction to
Ireland's marine resource which includes copies of maps, lessons plans
for teachers, worksheets for students and class activities. These can be
downloaded in parts as follows:
The Real Map of Ireland - Teachers Introduction (141 KB) can be used to
provide information in context of its place, space and environment.
"What would you do with..." illustrations (pdf 1013 KB) provide teachers
