Reducing Obesity in Children
The Heart Foundation is launching an educational programme:
Edu-Heart.

Childhood obesity is a growing concern with the rate of overweight
children in South Africa being 12%, with United States of America at
14%.

Childhood obesity is linked primarily to unhealthy eating habits, but
is also linked to the fact that children today are a lot less active
than in the past.

The Heart Foundation has over 270 000 children in crèches
participating in Childcare Programmes throughout South Africa.
These crèches are from previously disadvantaged areas and the
children are taught about a healthy lifestyle, importance of
exercise, basic hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention, dangers of smoking
and healthy eating.

The Heart Foundation is soon to release an information poster and
menu for use to promote healthy eating in the crèches and ensure
a balanced diet. The Heart Foundation is launching an
educational programme: Edu-Heart. This project is aimed at Primary
schools throughout South Africa, starting off in the Western Cape.

Currently the Edu-Heart programme is getting some response from
schools in the Western Cape and we are soon to move into the rest
of South Africa. This programme is designed to instil healthy eating
habits among children, allowing them to make healthy choices
through their life and grow up to be healthy adults. As children
spend a large part of their time at school, the food they eat there is
of vital importance.

By offering healthy choices at the tuck shop, by vendors and
vending machines or by encouraging healthy packed lunches, we
can hopefully ensure that the majority of foods children consume
out of the home are suitable. Schools will be given a simple
questionnaire to fill in and then according to their reply, will be
given information packs via email or fax, that will help them in
choosing healthier alternatives to sell and encourage their pupils to
eat.

By making certain changes to their tuck shops, the schools then
have the opportunity to become endorsed by the Heart
Foundation. Parents have a chance to get involved too. By
providing the Heart Foundation with your details, you will have the
opportunity to receive regular updates on healthy eating for your
children as well as general heart health.

The Edu-Heart programme is available for sponsorship and support,
if you want any further information, or if you know of a school that
would be interested, please contact: Emma Dresner or Carine
Clarke on 021- 447 4222 email: edu-heart@heartfoundation.co.za
