Feeling drained or out of sorts?
It could be your chakras...

According to yoga chakras are seven energy centres in the body, which are the
openings for life energy to flow into and out of your aura. Energy radiates
outwards from the centre of each chakra, like the spokes of a wheel.

When one chakra is more active than the others,
you may become unbalanced. This lack of balance
can lead to a life that is off-balance. For example,
if you focus too much on physical matters at the
expense of intellectual and spiritual ones, the being
as a whole will suffer. Signs of an imbalance include
anxiety, fear and listlessness, but if you can bring
back your chakral balance, you can look forward to high
energy levels and a positive, calm outlook on life.

Get your groove back!

Take our simple mini-quiz to reveal which of your chakras may need to be
brought into balance.*

1. Which colour do you have the least of in your home and wardrobe?

a) Blue b) Pink c) Red d) Purple e) Green f) Orange g) Violet

2. Which is your favourite colour?

a) Blue b) Pink c) Red d) Purple e) Green f) Orange g) Violet

The colour you have the least of is probably your chakra that needs the most
work at the moment and your favourite colour is most likely your most
developed chakra. Try balancing it by developing its opposite: solar plexus vs
brow or crown, sacral vs throat, and base vs heart (see next page for types of
chakras).

Try these tips to align your chakras:

Feeling exhausted?
Add some orange and yellow to your outfit and environment. Orange increases
vitality and energy, and yellow is the colour of optimism.

It’s exam time and you are a bundle of nerves:
Try adding some blue to your wardrobe and make-up. A lack of blue may be a
sign that you need to chill out a bit.

An arrogant driver has just cut you off in the traffic and you are literally seeing
red:
You need to calm down, so focus on the colour green. A green traffic light would
be good but visualising calm green moss will bring your blood pressure down.

You are feeling withdrawn and struggling to communicate with your friends and
family:
Wear a turquoise scarf or put a bunch of blue flowers in your room to help
balance your fifth chakra.

You’ve gone on a binge – food, sex, whatever – yet again: It could be that your
sacral chakra is under-active. Try eating orange food or wearing something
orange.

* Disclaimer: this quiz is only an indication of your chakral balance and is by no
means a conclusive test.

7 chakras and their aspects

The base chakra:
This chakra is located at the base of the spine. Physically it
governs your back, legs, hips, feet and spine. The base chakra is our connection
to the earth, survival and a sense of groundedness. It is the seat of passion and is
the chakra that relates to sexuality. If you are feeling drained, it may be because
your base chakra is not working optimally or absorbing enough positive energy.

Colour: red; mineral to wear/keep nearby: red jasper; gland: adrenal glands;

The sacral chakra: This chakra is located in your abdomen, just below your belly
button. It is responsible for physical and sexual health, and physically governs the
reproductive system. This is the chakra associated with self-gratification,
pleasure, desire, passion and love.

Colour: orange; mineral to wear/keep nearby: sardoine; glands: gonads or
ovaries; element: water

The solar plexus chakra: This chakra, located about 3cm above your belly
button, is associated with the solar plexus which is the ‘brain’ of the nervous
system. Physically it governs the digestive system, stomach and liver. This chakra
helps us to capture energy and receive vibrations from people and events.
Because it is associated with emotional turmoil and reacts to thoughts related
to fear, anxiety and worry, it is a common chakra to find out of balance.

Colour: yellow; mineral to wear/keep nearby: topaz; gland: pancreas; element:
fire

The heart chakra: Found in the centre of your chest, the heart chakra is
associated with love and physically governs your heart, liver, respiratory system,
circulation and nervous system. It corresponds to feelings of unconditional love,
empathy, compassion, forgiveness and availability.

Colours: green and rose pink; mineral to wear/keep nearby: aventurine; gland:
thymus gland; element: air

The throat chakra: This chakra is found at the base of your throat. It allows
communication between our interior and exterior worlds. On a physical level it is
connected to the metabolism, throat, trachea and arms. It is the creative
centre of communication and self-expression and associated with truth, wisdom,
knowledge, honesty and speech.

Colour: turquoise; mineral to wear/keep nearby: lapis lazuli; gland: thyroid;
element: sound

The brow chakra: Situated between your eyebrows is your brow chakra, which
physically relates to your spine, nose, ears, eyes and the back part of your brain.
This is the chakra associated with perception  and intuition.

Colours: indigo or midnight blue; mineral to wear/keep nearby: azurite; gland:
pituitary gland; element: light

The crown chakra: Located at the top of your head, the crown chakra is
physically associated with the upper parts of the brain and nervous system. This is
the chakra that corresponds to our spiritual ‘will to be’ and self-realisation. When
the crown chakra is open you are calm and at peace, and may find yourself
drawn to mystical elements.

Colour: violet; mineral to wear/keep nearby: amethyst; gland: pineal gland;
element: thought.
