How to Play Apples to Apples

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Apples to Apples is a card game that is best played in a large group. There are different versions for different age groups, and booster packs of cards for even more fun. You can even make your own cards. With proper instruction, you can play Apples to Apples at your next family gathering.

Steps

  1. Have all of the players sit in a circle around a table or on the floor.
  2. Take the card tray out of the box, and make sure that there are two stacks of red cards and one of green, and that the cards are face down.
  3. Select one player to be the judge. This person should understand the rules of the game very well.
  4. Have the judge deal out five red apple cards to each player or team, including themselves.
  5. Have the leader take the top green apple card and set it face up in the middle of the table. The leader should make sure that everyone knows what is printed on the green apple card.
  6. Get each player except for the judge to choose one of their red apple cards that fits the word on the green apple card best. For example, if the green apple card says "cute", and your cards say "potato chips", "school", "babies", "grass", and "camping", you would most likely pick "babies". Once you have chosen a card, set it face down in the middle of the floor or table. But make sure to play towards the judges personality, so if you have a card that says kittens, and the judges loves cats it would be a good choice
  7. Mix the cards. When each player has put a card in the middle of the circle, the leader mixes them up (so they can't play favorites -- if the cards are shuffled around, they won't know who deposited which card).
  8. Have the leader turn over each card and reads the words aloud. Then, he/she chooses the card that they think makes the most sense. Once the judge has chosen a red apple card, the decision is final. The player whose card was chosen gets the green apple card.
  9. Place the rest of the red apple cards in a pile on the side of the table.
  10. Have the judge pass the card tray to the left and that person becomes the new judge.
  11. Deal. The judge deals everyone except the old judge (that includes him/herself) one red apple card, so that everyone has five red cards again.
  12. Play continues following steps 5 - 11 until someone has four green apple cards -- that person is the winner.
  13. Before putting the game away, pick up the pile if discarded red apple cards and put them face down at the bottom of the pile in the tray.

Tips

  • Younger children who can't read or don't have a very big vocabulary can team up with an older child or adult. The older one in the group will help the younger child read and understand the words.
  • Players are allowed to playfully suggest that the judge choose their card.
  • Red apple cards that begin with "My" should be read from the judge's point of view.
  • As the judge, you are entitled to pick any red apple card you want. Some judges may choose to pick the funniest card in the bunch instead of being serious.
  • This game works best in a large group of people.
  • There are two other ways to play:
    • Quick Picked Apples - The object of this game is that players must choose their red apple cards as fast as possible. The last card placed on the table is returned to the player's hand and will not be judged during that round.
    • Crab Apples - In this variation, the judge chooses a red apple card that is the most opposite of the green apple card. For example, if the green apple card says "Fresh", you may choose "Dead Fish". This is a very fun twist to the game and is a sure way to start some laughs and great memories.
