Introduction
The African culture, like many others, has trickster tales. A trickster tale is a folktale
whose main character is an animal who tricks other animals. Many times the
character is lazy or mischevious. One of the favorite characters of African trickster
tales is Anansi the Spider, who has very special characteristics.

The Task
In this activity, you will read several Anansi tales , analyzing them to find common
characteristics of Anansi the Spider, make a list on Anansi's characteristics and
create a biopoem about Anansi.

What are the special characteristics of Anansi the Spider?
1. Print the graphic organizer.

2. Visit the following sites and read the three Anansi Tales online. If you have access
to other Anansi stories in your classroom, you may read those also to help you
develop you characteristics list for Anansi.

3. While reading the stories, analyze the story, noting the special physical and
personality characteristics of Anansi on the graphic organizer. The way the
character, Anansi, speaks, acts, and thinks and the way the narrator of the story
describes Anansi will help you.

Write an Anansi Biopoem
Use your notes to help you create a biopoem on Anansi following the format in the
Anansi Biopoem Form linked below..Be sure to use adjectives that show good
sensory details. To illustrate your poems with African symbols and a picture of what
you think Anansi looks like.

Revising and Evaluating Writing

Using the writing process, the poem should be written in rough draft form, and then
edited, checking for spelling and grammar errors, organization and improving
word choice. Finally write the poem in final draft form with appropriate African
support illustrations from either the web site African Art by region or African art ideas
your teacher provides.

How You Will Be Graded
Your poem must follow the biopoem format. The poem must show evidence of
physical and personality characteristics of Anansi from the Anansi stories you read.
