How to Start a Leprechaun Hunt

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Need a new Saint Patrick's Day tradition? Here is something to try. The leprechaun may or may not exist, depending on your point of view, but this hunt is really about celebrating St Patrick's Day in a fun way that helps to share the spirit of the occasion with children.

Steps

  1. Wake up early. Tell the participants in the Leprechaun Hunt that legend has it the leprechauns will only come out on Saint Patrick's Day, so you don't want to miss them.
  2. Obtain a net. This step is optional, as you might not be interested in catching your leprechaun and indeed, he may be offended if you do. You might also want to bring a camera, and camouflage clothes.
  3. Get your leprechaun hunting party together. Its a lot more fun when two or more people are participating in the Leprechaun Hunt. Children might like to take along siblings, cousins, neighbours and friends.
  4. Start your search. Start outside, because it's only natural that a leprechaun prefers the great outdoors. After all, leprechauns wear a lot of green and it stands to reason that green trees and grass provide perfect cover for them.
  5. Look for leprechaun tracks. If you see any, follow them. Leprechauns may also leave gold coins, or even chocolate coins. Of course, this may also be achieved by some kindhearted soul having gone ahead to ensure that the trail is there to be followed...it doesn't do to let down the excitement of children.
  6. Be aware that legend has it that leprechauns hate animals. Since they're most probably scared of dogs, cats, birds and squirrels, it's best to leave Fido home and to not look up the trees for leprechauns. The better places will be where the animals are not.
  7. Look at all possible hiding places. That includes trees, holes, and even sheds. The group leader should be prepared to reassure the hunting party now and then that a glimpse of something green and leprechaun-ish has been spotted ahead or to the side.
  8. Look closely. They could just be blending in. Are you sure you haven't seen one yet?
  9. Check near lawn gnomes if you have any. Leprechauns may think it's a real gnome and try to entertain the gnome with conversation or a riddle or two. Again, a kindhearted soul might do well to go ahead of the hunting party and help to enliven the hunt with a little evidence here and there; a small green feather, a small green hat, a dropped bag of golden chocolate coins...
  10. Go indoors. Once you've looked everywhere in your yard, start in your house. They might have already gotten inside:
    • Check near the door, that's where they'll go first.
    • Follow the same steps as for outside, except step 7.

Tips

  • It helps to decide what to do if you find one. Some people keep them, and some people just take their picture. You can also ask it for gold, but it'll probably refuse.
  • Be quiet! You won't find any leprechauns if you're loud! In fact, this is the principal reason why leprechauns are never found and being in a hunting party is likely to decrease your chances.
  • You can search in public, but they're not likely to be there; leprechauns value their privacy.
  • Remember, sometimes you just turn up coins.

Warnings

  • Don't get discouraged if you don't find one. It could take years. Be persistent.

Things You'll Need

  • A house with a yard
  • A net (optional)
  • A camera (optional)
  • Camouflage clothes (optional)
  • Patience and determination
  • Leprechaun evidence to keep the children enthused - dollar stores have great items pre-St Patrick's Day
  • Gold chocolate coins
