Memorial Day Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a federal holiday that commemorates American heroes who have died in military service to our country. It is a day to come together and remember fallen heroes, our loved ones and family members who have passed away, it is a day to give thanks and prayers to U.S. Veterans and active military.
Brief History At the end of the Civil War, the first Memorial Day was said to have occurred in Charleston, S.C. in 1865, where a patriotic parade with singing took place honouring the lost soldiers. However, historians today consider Waterloo, NY as the official birthplace of Memorial Day, as this location was the first to honour the day each year, beginning in 1866 and promoting its growth.
General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Veterans' organisation Grand Army of the Republic, proclaimed in 1868 that "Decoration Day" be observed nationwide. On May 30, 1868, the tombs of fallen U.S. soldiers were decorated in remembrance.
With the end of WWI, Memorial day was expanded to include all American soldiers who had died in war or military action. Traditionally taking place on May 30th, Memorial Day was changed in 1968 to the last Monday of May.
