A Quick Explanation of Quidditch

Quidditch is a wizard sport played on broomsticks. The game
is played between two teams of seven players, with three
Chasers, two Beaters, a Keeper and a Seeker on each side.
There are four balls in Quidditch. One Quaffle, two Bludgers
and the Golden Snitch. The pitch has six hoops, three at
either end, and points are scored when a Chaser puts the
Quaffle through one of the opposition's hoops. Ten points for
each time a Chaser scores. The Keeper tries to prevent the
opposing Chasers scoring.

The Bludgers are malevolent self propelled balls slightly
smaller than the Quaffle. They fly around the pitch trying to
hit the players. The Beaters of both teams are armed with
small clubs like rounders bats and try to hit the Bludgers away
from their teammates and toward to opposing team's
players. The Golden Snitch is a tiny gold ball about the size of
a large walnut, with fluttering silver wings. The role of the
Seeker is to capture the Snitch, which ends the game and
earns the Seeker's team 150 points. The 150 point advantage
can often overwhelm an opposing advantage, and unless
the game goes on for a long time can be the sole cause of
victory.
Early in his first year at Hogwarts Harry Potter was chosen to
play as Seeker for Gryffindor house quidditch team. After
snatching a falling remembrall out of the air a foot above
the ground at the end of a fifty foot dive, Harry is taken to
meet Oliver Wood, captain of the Gryffindor team, and
made the youngest Seeker in about a century. Just
another facet of Harry's fame, this is something which is his
alone and which he enjoys above all other aspects of life
at Hogwarts. Harry turns out to be just as good a Seeker as
Professor McGonagall said he was, and takes the
quidditch cup from Slytherin. Every time Harry has been
allowed to play, he has kept the cup in Gryffindor's hands.
Quidditch Brooms

The Firebolt is the world's fastest, finest and most famous broom. It is
also the most expensive. The Nimbus 2000 and Nimbus 2001 brooms
are still the Firebolt's main competitor, and are considerably more
affordable. Comet is fast and good at cornering, but tends to warp
with age. A Cleansweep broom is similar in speed and usefullness to
the Comet, but cheaper and not as good at braking.

All the above broom manufacturers appear in the Harry Potter
books at various times, with various Comets and Cleansweeps
being most common. In Harry Potter's first year at Hogwarts, he is
chosen to play Seeker for Gryffindor after displaying amazing
natural talent in his first ever flying lesson. That year he flies a
Nimbus 2000, the best broom available at the time, aquired for him
by Professor McGonagall, presumably at her own expense. The next
year, Malfor joins the Slytherin team, probably in exchange for the
Nimbus 2001s his father kindly donated to each of the Slytherin
players. Harry is still riding his 2000. Then in the third year Harry
receives a Firebolt, the very best broom available even now. The
sender is unknown until near the end of the book, when Sirius Black
admits it was his present to Harry.

It is interesting to note that the Hogwarts staff gave the broom a
thorough vetting to check for any jinxes or hexes which might have
been placed on it, and yet it returned to Harry in pristine condition.
A testament to the professional skills available at Hogwarts. In
recent years Harry hasn't played much Quidditch, for various
reasons, but in the fourth year he does use his Firebolt to confuse a
dragon whilst he steals a fake egg from her nest. Hopefully, in his last
few years at Hogwarts Harry will find the opportunity to shine on the
Quidditch pitch once more.
