Halloween (also spelled Hallowe'en) is a holiday celebrated on October 31. It has
roots in the
Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints’ Day. It is
largely a secular celebration, but some Christians and pagans have expressed strong
feelings about its religious overtones.

All Saints' Day (also called All Hallows or Hallowmas), often shortened to All Saints,is a
feast celebrated on November 1 in Western Christianity, and on the first Sunday after
Pentecost in Eastern Christianity in honour of all the saints, known and unknown.
In terms of Western Christian theology, the feast commemorates all those who have
attained the beatific vision in heaven. Specifically, in the Roman Catholic Church,
the next day, All Souls' Day, commemorates the departed faithful who haven't yet
been purified and reached heaven.

Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America during
Ireland's
Great Famine of 1846. The day is often associated with the colours orange and black,
and is strongly associated with symbols such as the jack-o'-lantern.
Halloween
activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, ghost tours, bonfires, costume
parties, visiting haunted attractions,
carving jack-o'-lanterns, pranking people,
reading scary stories, and watching horror movies. For

To commence our Halloween Journey we will need to take a look at some of the
more common questions that children are likely to ask, and with brief answers, each
question opens up the possibility of an entire independent lesson plan.  Again this
information will be used at the discretion of the educator to create an age
appropriate lesson plan.
