July 16 to 21 is National Farm Safety Week In Australia. National Farm Safety Week aims to
raise awareness of farm safety issues in rural communities across .  The theme each year
for the week is considered to highlight the importance of business and industry working
together to achieve the Farmsafe mission / vision statement of improving the well-being of
Australian farmers through improved attention to OHS.

Each year,
Farmsafe would like to continue its alliance with the media by putting farm safety
in the minds of the community and policy makers.  The review should include any critical
comments, a gauge of media interest / coverage and any suggestions for next year.

We also ask that you keep good copies of any newspaper articles relevant to Farm Safety
Week and forward them to the
Farmsafe so that a national scrapbook can be compiled on
the event.

This year's Farm Safety Week's theme is 'Working towards a safer future'. Supporting picture
for media release are available by contacting  Kerri-Lynn Peachey at Farmsafe on 02 6752

A lot of focus and emphasis is placed on children growing up on farms, and although
Australian based units, these units can be incorporated into any Farm Safety Unit Study.
They are packed FULL of activities, and contain resources for teachers/homeschooling
parents.  The Unit is accompanied by a beautiful story book, and slides highlighting the
various aspects of farm life, farming, implements, etc.  These  brilliant resources are
available as a FREE download.

Farms are great places for kids when we create the right environment, but safety for children
on farms is a major concern.

On average, one child under 16 years is fatally injured on an Australian farm every 10 days
and many more are hospitalised or treated by General Practitioners across rural Australia.

The major causes of child deaths and injuries on farms are dams, farm vehicles, machinery,
motorcycles and horses. Age and development characteristics also place children at greater
risk.

Key recommendations for child safety on farms are to create a securely fenced house yard
for children to play and have safety rules that everyone knows and follows.

These include ensuring children:

stay in the safe play area unless an adult can closely supervise them on the farm
wear seatbelts and restraints when in cars, utes and trucks
don't ride on tractors, ATV's or in the back of utes
always wear helmets when riding bikes and horses
However, families still need to identify the hazards and risks specific to their farm. Controlling
these risks involves not only safety behaviours, but should start with reducing hazards and
designing for safety where possible.
